Maintaining Fitness

Those returning to swimming please don’t despair as you need to be prepared for your body not to react in quite the way that you remember. It won’t take long for you to ‘feel’ the water again and be patient; the fitness side of things will come back gradually. It is important to keep this level of training up and challenge yourself in every training session to ensure that you progress and stay motivated. Stay positive and try not to stick to your favourite stroke or drill, keep it varied. Remember to drink plenty of fluid before, during and after your sessions.

Cross Training

Cross training is vital to maintain a good level of fitness and develop muscle fibres. We all know that triathletes are some of the fittest people around and that’s down to the combination of land work and water work. However, this must also include stretching exercises and core stability exercises to keep you swimming at your best. The gym can provide some excellent exercises specific to the swimming strokes.
